This is a professional position responsible for providing supervision and oversight of information systems support services in the areas of planning, upgrading and maintaining local area network operations, integrating local area network functions with the federal Social Security Administration (SSA) and State Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) wide-area networks, managing software security, and providing expertise in planning and purchasing of microcomputer hardware, software and peripherals.
Supervises maintenance of the local area network on a daily basis, including assignment of tasks and evaluation of work performed by staff to operate and maintain the network operations; plans and coordinates agency-wide installations and upgrades; participates in the short and long range planning processes with regard to procurement of hardware, software and peripherals; prepares technical documentation for use by network staff to network maintenance and upgrades; develops network protocols, policies, and procedures; provides oversight of the agency help-desk concerning network related problems; identifies staff training needs in cooperation with the training officer; troubleshoots and resolves network connectivity and network related hardware/software problems; designs the network files structure and prepares plans, reports and diagrams architecture; assures agency compliance with established security protocols for access to the local and wide area networks.
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Management Information Systems, or other information technology-related field to include course work in local or wide area networks from an accredited college or university.
EXPERIENCE: 3 years of experience planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices; or evaluating, implementing and maintaining hardware and software, is required.
Knowledge of local and wide area network server hardware, software, protocols and practices; knowledge of Office 2007/2010, and Terminal Emulators; knowledge of an Ethernet network, Cisco routers and switches and Windows 2007, 2003 and 2008 servers; skill in supporting, maintaining and troubleshooting multi-server network technology; skill with assessing user needs and evaluating and recommending suitable hardware and software; skill supervising and providing clear instructions to staff; ability to support and maintain a multi-server LAN and WAN technology; ability to interact and support the technology needs of users from all levels of the organization and contacts outside the division; ability to write clear and concise instructions and efficiently maintain logs and records on system operations; ability to establish collaborative working relationships when interacting with and supporting the technology needs of users from all levels of the organization and contacts outside the division; ability to ensure network connectivity and functionality during core business hours.
