Main Purpose of Job

These are special appointment positions responsible for providing administrative and secretarial support to various Divisions/Offices within the Maryland State Department of Education.


Provides administrative support and coordinates daily activities for the Division/Office for  specific projects; reviews  correspondence,  and determines appropriate action; schedules and coordinates appointments, meetings, and special events;  assists  in the planning and implementation of new or revised programs, procedures, practices, and organizations; prioritizes and completes correspondence and maintains a comprehensive document management system; responds to or refers inquiries to appropriate areas; completes requisitions and purchases supplies and reconciles invoices; serves on various committees as requested; and performs other duties as assigned.


Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative or professional work. One year of the required experience must have been in Office Management.


1. Applicants may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required   education and experience.  

2. Applicants may substitute experience as defined above for the required education at the rate of one year experience for 30 credit hours of education, for up to 60 credit hours of the required education.


Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook; knowledge of the principles and practices of office management; skill in organizing and managing multiple tasks with close attention to detail; skill in exercising sound judgment in answering inquiries; skill in proofreading;  ability to communicate clearly and effectively, using correct grammar, spelling, and language conventions, in all written documents and correspondence and in all verbal communications; ability to organize and manage multiple tasks and timelines to ensure timely production and delivery of materials; ability to prepare a variety of complex documents, including correspondence, reports, handouts, databases, charts, graphs, and spreadsheets; ability to prepare and present reports accurately and to make recommendations for improvements; ability to work independently and with minimal supervision; ability to establish and maintain effective harmonious working relationships.
