Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to assist the Maintenance Supervisor on a daily basis with Facilities Operations and Maintenance. This position performs plumbing, carpentry, HVAC and electrical duties as required to maintain the Rockville District and Silver Spring District Court Buildings in Montgomery County. This is designated as a 24 hour Emergency Essential position.

POSITION DUTIES

A Maintenance Mechanic Senior is the advanced level of work in the building and grounds maintenance trades. An employee in this class is required to perform general maintenance tasks such as simple construction, repairs to roadways and walks, routine preventative maintenance, heavy janitorial and general services work. Although the bulk of the employee’s work time is spent in the actual performance of maintenance and repair tasks, on occasion the employee may serve as a lead worker. The employee assigns work, examines completed work and provides immediate guidance and assistance to a team of unskilled or semi-skilled employees such as Maintenance Mechanics, patient or inmate helpers, chauffeurs and janitorial employees.

Employees receive general supervision from a Maintenance Chief or other designated higher-level maintenance staff. Employees may be required to work in areas of extreme heat or cold and may be required to lift heavy objects, such as furniture or equipment.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

- Maintain grounds by mowing lawn areas; clearing roadways, parking lots and sidewalks of debris and clutter; and may perform maintenance repairs on associated gasoline operated equipment. .

- Performs repairs to building such as replacing ceiling tiles, plaster, floor tile, concrete areas, including thresholds and doorways (doors, locks, hinges and related hardware).

- Visually inspects plumbing fixtures; completes repairs, if necessary such as leaks and breakage; and cleans up the area.

- Works with and/or supervises community service workers while maintaining landscape, flower beds and shrubbery.

- Receives supplies, maintains inventory records for material used and stores materials in neat and orderly fashion. 

- Collects recycling materials; prepares for collection; and records recycling quantities.

- Makes repairs to electrical tools.

- Drives state vehicle; performing pick-up and delivery of materials.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades of which three years shall have been in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.

Notes:

1. Applicants may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.

2. A degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field may be substituted for up to three years of the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least one year of experience instructing, leading and/or training lower-level Maintenance Mechanics, semi-skilled and unskilled workers, is preferred.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to applicants willing to work in Montgomery county.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
