Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job involves both the primary clinical and the supervisory aspects of psychology in corrections. The clinical purpose is to provide psychology services to adult inmates in a correctional facility. Diagnosis and treatment are provided to offenders who are mentally ill, or have a mental disorder, to help diminish the probability of harm to themselves or others. Services are directly related to the mission of facilitating public safety, maintaining safety within the facility and whenever possible, ameliorating conditions of acute mental illness. Supervisory aspects include, maintaining standards of practice in all psychological functions, developing an administrative framework to facilitate delivery of services and making effective use training, data management, communication skills and program development to maintain professional growth and productivity in all departmental functions.

POSITION DUTIES

Directs the program of a psychology services unit in a correctional setting;

Plans, organizes, schedules and directs the work of professional and clerical personnel;

Coordinates the psychological services program with other disciplines and integrates new policies and procedures into existing programs;

Provides direct psychological services in the most complex cases;

Conducts group therapy sessions;

Administers and interprets psychological tests for selected inmates;

Participates in the evaluation of inmates with relation to the diagnosis, treatment and/or guidance indicated for the individuals tested;

Directs and collaborates with other professionals carrying out psychological research in a correctional setting;

Prepares psychological statistical and other reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations;

Communicates with lay and professional groups to explain the program and to establish better relations with the general public;

Keeps abreast of professional literature and attends special conferences and seminars;

Performs other related duties.

MINIMUM EDUCATION OR GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a doctoral degree in psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university acceptable to the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Experience: Four years of experience providing psychological services, two years of which must have been in a correctional setting. Two years of the experience must have been after completion of the doctoral degree.

Note: A twelve month internship required for the doctoral degree may be substituted for one year of general experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists prior to permanent appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license has been obtained, submit a copy of the license to the Department of Budget and Management to remove pending status.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Prior to probationary appointment, candidates must meet all selection standards as set forth in the Code of Maryland Regulations by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Candidates who receive a probationary appointment must satisfactorily complete a prescribed training program prior to permanent appointment. Selection standards of the Correctional Training Commission may be obtained from the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
