Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Service in Oxford, Maryland, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist III-level Research Laboratory Manager in the Shellfish Health Project. This position will perform complex laboratory technical analyses to detect and identify diseases and disease agents in shellfish and finfish tissues, and in environmental samples, in order to investigate, monitor, and report the health status and disease threats to Maryland shellfish and other aquatic resources. The position uses expert skills in shellfish and fish anatomy to secure analytical tissue samples by dissections of live and dead animals, and uses microbiological, histological, DNA-based, and antibody-based assays to detect and identify pathogens and diseases. The position manages, maintains, and operates sophisticated laboratory equipment and reagents for in vitro microbe isolation, propagation, and cryopreservation, for DNA isolation and analytical PCR-amplifications, for in situ histological assays with antibodies and DNA probes, for preparation of histological samples, and for performance and analyses of microbiological assays. The position writes and illustrates articulate technical reports on methods and results of laboratory research and analytical efforts.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology or a natural resources management related field of study

Experience: Four years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Notes:

1. Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credits for one year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred applicant will demonstrate at least one year of professional experience using two or more of the following technical methods:

1) PCR assays for nucleic acids of microbes and disease markers, including those occurring among host tissues is preferred but not required. 

2)  In situ assays of histological sections with DNA and antibody probes specific for pathogenic microbes, disease conditions, or expressed genes is preferred but not required.

3)  Axenic in vitro propagation and manipulation of tissue culture cell lines or microbial isolate cultures is preferred but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
