Main Purpose of Job

The Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) is seeking to hire four Regional Advocacy Specialists to work in each regional office. The offices include the Central Maryland Regional Office located in Baltimore City, the Southern Maryland Regional Office located in Laurel, the Western Maryland Regional Office located in Hagerstown, and the Eastern Shore Regional Office located in Salisbury. The Regional Advocacy Specialists will provide training to people with developmental disabilities to enable them to advocate for themselves, will assist with questions and concerns from individuals who receive DDA funding and will provide outreach and education to community organizations. The Regional Advocacy Specialists will report to the Director of Advocacy Supports located at DDA Headquarters and will be responsible for supporting and ongoing management of the Regional Advocacy Specialists. The incumbents should have a demonstrated history of advocating for yourself and others, have experience in outreach to Self-Advocates, Self-Advocacy groups, and other organizations and be comfortable with speaking in public. The employees must be able to attend up to five days of new hire training (paid) and be available to work some evenings/weekends which may require some travel as needed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

Experience: One year of experience in administrative or professional work.

NOTES:

1. Candidates may substitute experience as defined above for the required education at the rate of one year of experience for 30 credit hours, for up to 60 credit hours of required education.

2. Candidates may substitute 90 credit hours at an accredited college or university for the required education and experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

DESIRABLE:

Have some experience developing and conducting training

Be comfortable working alone in separate regions from manager and other team members

Be eager to bring new ideas and plans to the team

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
