Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency has a position for an Administrative Specialist III within the Agency’s Administration Division/ Data Control Unit, located at 120 E. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System. The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 193,000 active members and more than 137,000 retirees and beneficiaries.

Main Purpose of Job

The main function of this position to process enrollment applications for newly hired employees of the State and participating employers.

POSITION DUTIES

This position reviews incoming enrollment paperwork (Application for Membership form, Designation of Beneficiary form, and Proof of Birth documentation) to ensure that they are complete and accurate; works with Retirement Coordinator's to correct incomplete or incorrect paperwork; and ensures that membership records are correctly created for these new members in the pension system database.  

This position also reviews and processes Designation of Beneficiary forms that are received from members throughout their employment to initiate changes to their previous beneficiary designations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience as defined above at the rate of one year experience for 30 credit hours of education for up to 60 credit hours of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required education and experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience processing forms, documents, or applications in a governmental or financial environment (e.g. retirement plan documents, insurance forms, lending applications, health insurance applications or claims, etc.).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

QUALIFICATIONS: You must possess the minimum qualifications to be considered for this position. If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the assessment, you may participate in the examination process. Credit may be given for relevant part-time, temporary, or volunteer experience, if you list the number of hours worked per week. For education obtained outside the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. This evaluation must be submitted with your application. All information used to determine your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date. Therefore, be sure that you accurately and thoroughly complete the application.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the job. It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIFIED, or QUALIFIED.

The list will be valid for at least one year and may be extended.

The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.
