This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Engineering and Construction Unit- Cambridge, Maryland location.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Engineering & Construction Unit, Cambridge, Maryland, is currently accepting applications for a Waterways Improvement Technician III under direction of the Chief of In-House Construction Services.  This position is responsible to work as a crew leader for marsh and shoreline restoration, wetland enhancement, wildlife habitat projects and part of the marine construction crew assisting in the construction of bulkheads, piers, boat ramps, jetties, dredging and any related projects associated with improving Maryland's waterways.

The incumbent should have knowledge of the following: navigation and boat operations; design, methods and materials used in building piers, bulkheads and jetties. Incumbent should also possess working knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay and other Maryland tidewaters; rules and regulations of the U.S. Coast Guard and Maryland Boat Act.

The selected candidate must have the ability to: prepare engineering designs for waterway projects; to estimate costs of bulkheads, piers, jetties, marsh, shoreline, wetland projects and dredging operations; to interpret specifications; to sound bottoms and take samples; to supervise operations of boats, cranes, pile drivers, and hydraulic equipment.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from a standard high or possession of a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Eight (8) years of experience in marine construction activities, including design and construction of piers, bulkheads and jetties; two years of which must have been in a supervisory position in the field of marine construction.

Notes: 

1.  Applicants may substitute engineering education at an accredited college or university (approved by the Engineer’s Council for Professional Development) for the required non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the physical sciences classifications or physical sciences specialty codes in the hydrologic technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.   

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1.  Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which require the individual to be examined by a physician.  After an offer of employment applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify ability to perform essential job functions.

2.  Candidates must be willing to travel and be available for work in any part of the State, subject to change of assignment as work requires.
