This is a Designated Appointment position. The incumbent will serve at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

This position would serve as the lead media relations staff person. Duties primarily include writing press releases, responding to media inquiries, creating and planning press events and writing for agency publications. The incumbent will regularly act as an official spokesperson for the agency, make operational recommendations and write talking points and briefing memorandums for the Comptroller.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

NOTES:

  1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet both of the selective qualifications to be considered. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

  • A bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related field. (Applicants may substitute four years of experience working at a television or radio broadcasting organization for the required education.).
  • One year of experience working at a television or radio broadcasting organization.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Associated Press style
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar and composition
  • Ability to arrange and edit information for a desired audience
  • Experience working in government settings
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word and Excel

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview.  Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
