The Office of the Public Defender is seeking well organized, customer service and detailed oriented persons with good time management and problems solving skills proficient in Microsoft Office to fill a full-time Administrative Officer I position in its Montgomery County office in Rockville. The Administrative Officer I is responsible for the management, supervision and coordination of support staff operations for the Montgomery County office which is headquartered in Rockville. Travel between offices may also be required.

Main Purpose of Job

The Administrative Officer I is administrative work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans or policies. Employees are assigned administrative responsibilities involving the analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvements. Employees in this classification may supervise professional, technical or clerical staff. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a higher-level administrator or management official.

POSITION DUTIES

The Administrative Officer I is responsible for the management, supervision and coordination of support staff services for the Montgomery County office that is headquartered in Rockville. The Administrative Officer I is responsible for the supervision and coordination of all office workload, attorney and support staff interactions and oversees the effective operations within the office to serve our clients. The Montgomery County office has staff at two worksites requiring effective and efficient flow of work within the office, effective planning, scheduling and management of all work location tasks.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: One (I) year experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook.

Experience working in a law office or court system, working with detained or incarcerated persons, attorneys and law enforcement or courtroom personnel.

Experience managing processes, systems and people.

To current State of Maryland employees only.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be admitted to the examination for this classification. Successful candidates will be ranked as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, QUALIFIED and placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a qualifications supplement, or the rating may be based on your application.
