Main Purpose of Job

This position is located in the Long Term Care Unit of the Office of Health Care Quality.  This position inspects, assesses, and evaluates the quality of care and life provided to residents in Long Term Health Care facilities in Maryland with a primary responsibility for the evaluation of the residents' overall health and well being. Additional areas of inspection responsibilities include the assessment and evaluation of residents' rights, activities/social participation, sanitation, infection control, and food and dietary services. The essential job function of a Long Term Care Surveyor is to conduct inspections at nursing homes and other long-term care related facilities.  The types of visits include annual recertification surveys, follow-up surveys, State monitoring visits, initial Medicare/Medicaid surveys, and any other types of visits that may be necessary.  The purpose of the visits is to insure that residents in these facilities have quality of life and care that are required by State licensure and Federal certification laws and regulations.  This is a field position that requires extensive travel and overnight stays throughout the state.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None

Note:

1. Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse may be substituted for the Education requirement.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing specialty codes in the inspection of health care facilities and program field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing.  A copy of your current license or license verification must accompany your application.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
