Main Purpose of Job

The Help Desk Administrator is a member of the Office of Information Technology at the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). The position will be primarily responsible for supporting agency personnel by ensuring proper computer equipment, software applications, and network connectivity are available and operational. Additionally, the position manages statewide data collection activities which include over 20 surveys and system files collected from approximately sixty institutions.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Perform and coordinate agency web site updates.
  • Evaluates personal computer hardware and software to provide solutions.
  • Perform network assistance and system setup activities.
  • Recommend the acquisition of appropriate agency hardware, software, and services.
  • Manage and control inventory of agency computer hardware and software.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and modification of the agency network and computer systems.
  • Prioritize agency Information Technology help desk activities with other duties.
  • Perform technical help desk functions for the agency’s web-based financial aid system.
  • Resolve state financial management system access issues.
  • Interface with institutions by phone and email for data collection submissions and activities.
  • Maintain data collection calendars and associated survey forms.
  • Update institutional data collection contact list.
  • Provide internal staff support for all data collection systems.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.  (For education obtained outside the U.S. you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education by a foreign credential evaluation service.)

Experience: One year of experience evaluating, implementing and maintaining personal computer hardware and software.

Note: Experience responding to and resolving help desk calls from users of computers, or operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data base or other applications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree or certificate in a relevant IT field from an accredited institution.
  • Technical experience providing support and troubleshooting for PC hardware and software packages, and network maintenance.
  • Knowledge of postsecondary education, related data collection systems, financial aid software packages and office automation technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interact diplomatically and effectively with people.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
