Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) is recruiting for Director, Hosting Centers and Transport.  This position will direct and coordinate the statewide operation of assets used to deliver IT services 24x7x365 to state and local government users, including hosting and data centers.  DoIT manages 1,500 miles of fiber, 3 mission critical data centers/hosting facilities, and numerous communications facilities across the state. These assets support critical infrastructure needed by:

  • Statewide Interoperable Public Safety Radio Network;
  • NetworkMaryland services, including Internet, Statewide Government Intranet, and the One Maryland Broadband Network;
  • Critical applications delivered through web applications and GIS data including Osprey, MDiMap, power outage maps, business licensing sites, and sites used by agencies to communicate with constituents.

This position oversees the creation and management of contracts for maintenance, the construction of new facilities, specifically of expansions to the fiber optic cable plant across the state.  Candidate must be willing to work overtime as required, must be confident and self-motivated with commitment to good work ethics.  This is a management service position that serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university .

Experience:  Minimum of seven years’ experience managing high availability facilities, high speed data networks, and telecommunications construction projects.  

Notes:

1. Experience above can be substituted on a year for year basis for the education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience and knowledge of facility power solutions including AC and DC solutions, backup power solutions, and generator power. 
  • Experience and knowledge of HVAC requirements and solutions as it relates to data centers and telecommunications equipment hosting facilities. 
  • Experience and knowledge of facility security solutions. 
  • Experience and knowledge of fiber optic cable construction principles and practices.
  • Experience and knowledge of wireless communications networks and the methods for interconnecting these networks (i.e., microwave and fiber optic cable).
  • Experience and knowledge of State of Maryland procurement processes and procedures.
  • Experience negotiating contracts and MOUs with customers and end users of telecom services.
  • Ability to lead others and collaborate with peers and stakeholders. Confidence and self-motivation. Problem-solving and decision-making skills. Commitment to good work ethics. Willingness to work overtime as required.
