LOCATION OF POSITION
MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HEADQUARTERS - ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND
Main Purpose of Job
The Chemist will perform analysis on agriculture materials, such as animal feeds, fertilizers and pesticides to assess specification compliance of those commercial products to the manufacturer's statement of content. They will also perform analysis that support the Department's, the Section's and other regulatory programs and initiatives prompted by state, federal, and local regulatory programs to conform to animal and consumer protection, public health and environmental standards.
POSITION DUTIES
Determines by chemical analysis the presence of specific analyte(s) and quantify them by performing specific procedures to isolate them from formulation/various matrixes and using state of the art analytical instrumentation. i.e., GC/FID, GC/ECD, GC/NPD, GC/MSD, HPLC-UV-vis, spectrometric and titrometric analysis, etc.
Prepares spreadsheets and reports of the methods, procedures, modifications, standards, instrumentation, calculations and any information relevant to the determination of the results to document the analytical process, that the Quality Assurance requirements are met, and the data produced by analysis is quantitatively or qualitatively defensible.
Attends scientific meetings, vendor seminars, and trainings.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Education: A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other related science which includes completion of at least 24 credit hours in chemistry from an accredited college or university. Transcripts must accompany application.
Experience: None.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in chemistry classification or chemistry specialty codes in the chemistry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

This is a full-time contractual position. As a contractual position, the selected candidate will be paid only for hours worked. This position has no state-paid leave (i.e. sick leave, annual leave, personal leave, holidays, etc.). The person filling this position may purchase healthcare insurance at the State's group rate, subsidy to be determined upon hire.
