Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Services, is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Technician I in Oxford, Maryland. The selected candidate will be responsible for collecting biological samples from a variety of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife around the state. Duties include biological sample collection, sample processing and storage, shipment of samples to diagnostic laboratories, maintenance of data sets, special projects and other biological and administrative duty related tasks. Candidate will be responsible maintaining all sampling supplies and equipment in clean/ working order, maintaining records, and performing necessary tasks to include freezer inventory, sample database maintenance, writing summary reports and other related duties as assigned. Safety standards and workplace training will be provided.

Note:  This position requires some weekend work and/or variable hours. We seek candidates in good physical condition as work is occasionally strenuous.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education:  Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.  

Experience:  None  

Note:  Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification will be subject to 24 hour on-call duty via cell phone and must be available evenings and weekends for field response.  This position may work onboard small boats and handle live and/ or dead animals.  The successful applicant must be willing and able to lift heavy equipment, carcasses, and supplies with assistance and process necessary sampling.
