Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to conduct investigations regarding complaints of regulatory or statutory violations conducted by those entities and/or persons licensed by the Maryland State Police. The position also conducts investigations to determine the eligibility of applicants to either hold a license or permit issued by the Maryland State Police and/or to purchase, rent, sell or transfer a regulated firearm.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION - Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

EXPERIENCE - Two years experience in administrative or professional work.

NOTES - 1.  Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2.  Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE - One year of experience in a law enforcement capacity, conducting administrative and/or criminal investigations.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.  Knowledge of federal and State of Maryland firearms laws

2.  Prior MAFSS, JIS, Judicial Case Search and/or DHMH access or experience

3.  Experience in reading and understanding State of Maryland and federal criminal history reports

4.  Prior CNII level NCIC/METERS access with at least one year of recent experience

5.  Experience in determining or validating application requirements for accuracy and completeness

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to random substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.  In addition, candidates will be subject to an initial drug screening and a complete criminal background investigation to include a polygraph examination before appointment can be made.  A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.

NOTE: Employees may be required to work a rotating shift during emergency situations at the discretion of management.
