Main Purpose of Job

The Natural Resources Planner I (Chesapeake Watershed Forester) coordinates tracking and implementation of forestry actions that improve water quality and habitat in the Chesapeake Bay watershed in Maryland. The incumbent combines planning and reporting tasks with field forestry assistance and GIS analysis. Coordination and planning include staffing the Chesapeake Bay Program Forestry Work Group and priority actions, Maryland's Forest Legacy Program, and other forest restoration and conservation efforts such as forest planning with local governments, source water protection, mineland planting, habitat restoration, landscape stewardship, and ecosystem markets. Job duties include riparian forest buffer planting and maintenance, other tree planting, forest management plans, and managing databases for reporting forestry BMPs to the Chesapeake Bay Program. GIS analyses include assessing forest resource extent and condition and targeting for forest buffers, forest conservation, and urban tree canopy. 

The Natural Resources Planner I (Chesapeake Watershed Forester) position is located in Annapolis, Maryland with statewide responsibilities and some travel within the Chesapeake Bay region. The position is full-time, 40 hours/week, and may involve occasional weekend or evening hours for meetings or events such as volunteer tree plantings. The applicant must have a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland. A State vehicle is available for travel to field or meeting locations from the office. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in an environmental science or natural resources planning, management or development.

Experience: None

Notes:

1. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in urban or regional planning, engineering, physical geography, or the physical, chemical, biological sciences and one year of experience in natural resources planning or applied environmental science may be substituted for the required education.

2. Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in natural resources planning, management, administration, development, environmental, urban or regional planning; resources economics or development; environmental system management; water or land resources planning and management; environmental landscape architecture; or the physical, biological, chemical or environmental sciences maybe substituted for up to three years of the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Training in field forestry skills and geographic information systems is preferred but not required.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
