Introduction

The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council is a federally funded public policy and advocacy organization. Our mission is to advance the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life by eliminating barriers, creating opportunities, empowering people, and promoting innovation. The Special Projects Coordinator will work with Council staff and outside partners to prioritize the tasks to be accomplished in meeting it's mission.

This is part-time contractual positions working 15 to 20 hours per week.

Main Purpose of Job

One of the Council's goals is to increase support available to children and adults in Maryland who have siblings with developmental disabilities. The Special Projects Coordinator will not provide the support, rather he/she will work in partnership with others, including siblings, to identify and implement a variety of strategies focused on children, teens, young adults, and adults. The qualified candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to formulate ideas and strategies to accomplish project goals; have experience with developmental disabilities in personal and/or professional life; work effectively with diverse individuals and organizations, including people with developmental disabilities and their family members; work autonomously without close supervision and determine and take logical next steps; have strong interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication and organization skills and be able to manage multiple activities and attend to details.

POSITION DUTIES

The Special Projects Coordinator will:

  • Assist with planning and executing the statewide sibling conference;
  • Identify and implement activities to increase the knowledge of siblings on topics of importance to them;
  • Identify and implement strategies to build adult sibling advocacy skills;
  • Identify and implement strategies to increase the number of adult siblings engaged in systems advocacy;
  • Identify ways to build and support the Maryland Sibling Network for adult siblings;
  • Identify and implement activities to support localized networking
  • Identify and support strategies and activities that focus on young adult siblings;
  • Implement information dissemination for teen siblings and parents;
  • Coordinate on line forum for teens;
  • Identify and implement ways to get siblings support locally;
  • Implement information dissemination for young siblings and parents;
  • Conduct outreach to determine number of kids/families who want/need support;
  • Identify additional ways to bring young siblings together for support;
  • Represent the sibling perspective at meetings/events, as needed; and
  • Assess ways to educate professionals about sibling issues. 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: Three years of experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidate may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of sibling interests and needs; and

Qualified siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

BENEFITS

This contractual position is less than 30 hours per week and therefore, will not be entitled to Heath Benefits or any paid benefits such as vacation, sick or holiday pay.
