Main Purpose of Job
The Contractual Community Health Educator I is the entry level of work planning, developing, implementing and promoting health education projects designed to further public awareness and understanding of the factors influencing health status and community health activities and services. The main purpose of this position is to provide WIC Program Services in compliance to DHMH WIC guidelines and the health department policy providing professional breastfeeding support in the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program at the Southern Maryland WIC agency (Calvert, Charles,and St. Mary's County). The selected candidate will work closely with the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and Breastfeeding Promotion Coordinator to counsel and support a diverse population of pregnant and breastfeeding women and serving as a professional resource for other local agency staff to include professionals and para-professionals. This position assures provision of program benefits to eligible women, infants and children in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education or Health Science.
Experience: None.
NOTES:
1. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 18 credit hours in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Science or related behavioral science and one year of experience in planning, developing, implementing and promoting health education projects may be substituted for the minimum education requirements.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Educator and Community Health classifications or Health Educator and Community Health specialty codes in the Public Health field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
The selected candidate must have credentials of an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or have other certification in lactation management (CLE or CLC) and experience counseling breastfeeding women.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland
