LOCATION OF POSITION

Flintstone, MD (Allegany County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for a Contractual Forester position located in Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland.  This position primarily implements the Town Creek/Allegany Special Rivers grant.  Duties will include forest buffer plantings, planning and organizing the County's backyard buffer program, organizing other tree planting and maintenance projects, and assisting both Cumberland's and Frostburg's Shade Tree Commissions and their urban tree planting programs.  The selected candidate will also write planting plans and Forest Stewardship Plans for private landowners, as well as carry out educational programs related to tree planting activities. The incumbent may assist with forest protection/fire suppression activities.

In the event that travel from field locations to the office is needed, a state vehicle will be available. 

Some work may require occasional weekends or evenings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters.

Experience: None.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Master of Science degree approved by the State Board of Foresters for the required Bachelor’s degree.

2. The education requirement is pursuant to Business Occupations and Professions Article, Sections 7-206 and 7-304 of the Annotated Code.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the forestry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Persons appointed to this classification will be subject to assignment in any county of the State. Upon permanent appointment, the employee will be required to reside in the county or region to which they are assigned.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to submit a telephone number where they can be reached in case of forest fire emergencies.

BENEFITS

This is a full-time contractual position.  As a contractual employee, the incumbent will be paid only for hours worked.  This position has no State-paid leave (i.e. sick leave, annual leave, personal leave, holidays, etc.).  Beginning on January 1, 2015, the incumbent may purchase healthcare insurance at the State's group rate, subsidy to be determined upon hire.
