Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for a contractual Forester I position stationed in the Washington Monument field office in Middletown, Maryland. This is a one-year renewable contract (contingent on funding). Services required will be primarily performed on Frederick City Watershed. Work entails, but is not limited to, marking property lines, conducting forest inventory data collection, marking timber sales by prescription, developing recommendations for management of forest stands, invasive species control and recommendations, wildland fire suppression, wildlife habitat improvement projects, working with the City of Frederick and public user groups to develop the recreation section of the Forest Stewardship plan, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects, and inspection of logging operations. The incumbent also assists with the Frederick County Backyard Buffers program and monitoring of research plantings related to hemlock woolly adelgid, and data collection in long-term buffer monitoring sites. Maintenance of equipment, as needed, that is used on Watershed property, and operation of the following equipment used in the above duties may apply: chainsaw, brush saws, tractors, ATV's, and other heavy equipment. 

Note: Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Some occasional weekend or evening obligations and occasional call-in obligations for fire emergencies may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from a school of forestry accredited by the Society of American Foresters.

Experience: None.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Master of Science degree approved by the State Board of Foresters for the required Bachelor’s degree.

2. The education requirement is pursuant to Business Occupations and Professions Article, Sections 7-206 and 7-304 of the Annotated Code.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the forestry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Persons appointed to this classification will be subject to assignment in any county of the State. Upon permanent appointment, the employee will be required to reside in the county or region to which they are assigned.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, are required to submit a telephone number where they can be reached in case of forest fire emergencies.
