Main Purpose of Job

The main goal of this position will be to function as a Lead Public Health Laboratory Scientist to subordinate Public Health Laboratory Scientist(s), within the Bioterrorism Unit of the Division of Microbiology. The incumbent will be performing analyses, interpreting and reporting test results on clinical specimens submitted to the State Public Laboratory for select agents as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable/infectious disease(s), hereditary disorders, and/or environmental hazards. This position may also troubleshoot problems and manage disruptions to the testing and reporting systems. This position plays a major role during Bioterrorism events including leading the third shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological, or multi-matrix samples; OR three (3) years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Notes: 1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

- One (1) year of experience performing microbiology testing in a Biosafety level 2 and/or Biosafety level 3 laboratory.

- Candidate must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear N95 and/or PAPR respiratory as required to perform testing in the BSL-3 laboratory.

-Candidate must be able to take any vaccinations required to perform Micro BT testing assays.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have experience handling potentially infectious pathogens and a sound knowledge of the principles of conventional microbiology based assays.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
