Introduction

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) Laboratories Administration now occupies a new five-story laboratory facility incorporating design strategies to achieve the Leadership in Energy and Design (LEED) Silver rating, which is equipped with innovative, and cutting-edge tools - to expand scientific testing capabilities to adapt to emerging threats; to enhance preparedness efforts in response to disease outbreaks and environmental hazards; and to pursue teaching partnerships within the local community. The Public Health Laboratory property is ideally situated in the heart of the scientific technology park at Johns Hopkins located adjacent to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Easily accessible by MTA transit system and metro, just minutes away from downtown Baltimore and the Inner Harbor waterfront community.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Laboratories Administration, Division of Virology and Immunology, Baltimore, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position will be to provide administration, management, employee supervision, technical and regulatory oversight, and consultation and/or training in the Virus Isolation/Arbovirus/Chlamydia Laboratory of the Division of Virology and Immunology. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining quality assurance in the laboratory including writing/revising SOPs, competency assessments, and proficiency tests; and monitoring the maintenance of equipment. The employee may also assign, review, and approve the work/training of lower-level scientists, technicians, and clerical staff assigned to the Virus Isolation/Arbovirus/Chlamydia Laboratory. The individual in this position will be required to maintain acceptable Hepatitis and Rabies Antibody Titer and must be fitted with an appropriate respiratory protection device (N-95 or PAPR) to perform work in the BSL-3 and other labs for an extended period of time. This position may temporarily assume the responsibility as a supervisor of a section if a vacancy occurs within the division. This is done as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable and hereditary disease, and from environmental hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university. **Please be sure to submit a copy of your official or unofficial transcript with your completed application.**

Experience: Four (4) years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; OR four (4) years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Notes:

1. Additional graduate education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of thirty credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

The successful applicant should have at least one (1) year of professional experience working with virus culture, virus neutralization, supervision, personnel matters, procurement policies, quality assurance, CLIA regulations, and BSL-3 training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
