LOCATION OF POSITION

Main Purpose of Job
To prepare samples for analysis. To assist chemists in ordering of supplies and general laboratory operation. To perform routine analysis on commercial products related to or affected by the use of agriculture. In addition, special analysis on environmental samples to support Maryland Department of Agriculture and other state agencies.
POSITION DUTIES
Prepare inspection samples for analysis and disposal of outdated sample materials.
Performs sample analysis on the following: Nitrogen and Protein on inspection samples; moisture and ash on inspection samples; Quats and Chlorine on inspection samples; and ruminant tissues on inspection samples. Associate Safety Officer for the Section.
Prepare report of analysis that documents method description instrument parameters, relevant calculations, QA/QC plan and results.
Orders and stocks the laboratory and maintains adequate supply of common solvents and other chemicals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
General Option Education: Completion of 60 credits from an accredited college or university including three courses in chemistry or biology.
Experience: Two years of experience as a laboratory assistant or technician.
Notes:
1. Additional experience in a laboratory applying chemical or biological techniques may be substituted for the required education at a rate of one year of experience for each 30 credits of the required college education.
2. Candidates may substitute an Associate’s or higher degree in chemistry or biology for the education or experience requirements. Agricultural Chemistry Option Education: Completion of 60 credits from an accredited college or university including four courses in chemistry or biology. Experience: Two years of laboratory experience applying chemical or biological analysis techniques.
Notes:
1. Additional experience in a laboratory applying chemical or biological analysis techniques may be substituted for the required college education at the rate of one year experience for each 30 credits of the required college education.
2. Candidates may substitute an Associate’s or higher degree in chemistry or biology for the education or experience requirements.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Medical Laboratory or Histopathology classifications or Medical Laboratory specialty codes in the field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
