Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service- Grantsville, MD.  This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only.  The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.  Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service, in Grantsville, Maryland is currently accepting applications for a Maintenance Chief IV. The position is responsible for the maintenance needs and operational requirements of all infrastructure within the 55000 acre Savage River State Forest, including the physical plant, vehicle and equipment fleet, and recreational and land management operations. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: vehicle and heavy equipment operation, transport, maintenance and repair; public and internal road and trail maintenance and construction; maintain all appropriate licensures and certifications; public camp site maintenance and cleaning; supervise, train, and direct assigned staff of technicians, contractual employees, community service workers, and volunteers in a variety of tasks such as vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance and repair, road and trail maintenance and repair (including construction, bridge building, culvert replacement, and surface grading), snow removal, camp site maintenance and cleaning, shooting range maintenance and upkeep, mowing, trail maintenance and other public service operations; routine inspection of all facilities and public use areas; develop short and long term maintenance plans to insure proper care, upkeep, and safety of all infrastructure including buildings, vehicles, equipment, roads, trails, campsites, and public day use areas; create and maintain an inventory of all forest roads along with developing necessary maintenance schedules for these; prepare, review, and maintain administrative reports and correspondences to document maintenance and management projects; direct and implement all procurement activities for required service contracts and supply needs necessary for maintenance and repair of all infrastructure; identify and insure implementation of all protocols necessary to address immediate and long term public safety concerns, environmental safety issues, and workplace safety and training of employees and volunteers; and maintain and support consistent and effective communication with the public, staff, business vendors, contractors, and officials on all aspects of operations.

Note: Applicants must be willing and available to work evenings and/or weekends for emergencies, fire suppression response, and other operational activities as needed. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of eighth grade.

Experience: Five (5) years experience in the building maintenence or building construction trades including four years of responsibility for assigning, reviewing and approving the work of other building maintenance or building construction workers.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in the licensed option must possess and maintain a current Maryland First Grade Stationary Engineer License from the Board of Examining Engineers and must list the license number and date on the application.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
