Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency has a position for an Administrative Specialist III within the Agency’s Administration Division/ Benefits Processing Unit, located at 120 E. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System. The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 200,000 active members and more than 142,000 retirees and beneficiaries.

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as an administrative specialist in the operations of the Retirement Processing Unit. The incumbent reports to the Retirement Processing Manager. Primary responsibilities include preparation and review of various retirement applications and retirement estimate worksheets, preparation of estimate and retirement application batches for submission to data entry, tracking retirement estimates and applications received via MS Access, preparing correspondence to return deficient forms and to inform retirees of benefit changes and assisting with mailing of estimates. Timely and accurate processing of transactions related to these processes are essential elements in aiding the Agency in meeting the objective of our Mission Statement which is to effectively communicate to participants and employers information about benefits provided by the system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience as defined above at the rate of one year experience for 30 credit hours of education for up to 60 credit hours of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required education and experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

1 year of experience preparing legal documents, processing credit applications, processing retirement benefits, preparing financial records, processing insurance claims, reviewing loan applications, or reviewing claims within the healthcare industry.

1 year of experience preparing financial worksheets, or entering data into computer based spreadsheets/database. 

1 year of experience preparing correspondence to request supplemental information or to provide notice of changes with benefits. 

1 year of experience processing a high volume of claims, applications, or financial records.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the job. It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIFIED, or QUALIFIED. The list will be valid for at least one year and may be extended. The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.
