Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Natural Resources, Chesapeake and Coastal Service, is currently accepting applications for a Volunteer Activities Coordinator II in Lothian, Maryland. The position will run for nine months from approximately April 2015 through December 2015. This is a part time position for approximately one day each week.
The selected candidate will recruit, train and coordinate volunteer activities for a community-based program related to restoration, research and monitoring, and education projects at the Jug Bay component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR). These activities include coordination and conducting of field sampling and monitoring efforts, including monitoring programs that may include bay grasses, emergent vegetation, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals, and/or birds with local volunteers. The incumbent will prepare, write and edit newsletter articles and brochures concerning the Jug Bay component of CBNERR related to volunteer activities and attend community events and represent CBNERR and Maryland DNR. The selected candidate will plan special events such as open houses, nature hike and canoe tours for organizations and individuals. Maintains volunteer orientation program. Stays apprised of Jug Bay watershed issues, activities and proposed activities in the Jug Bay watershed that may affect CBNERR. Utilizes volunteers to conduct restoration and management activities assisting with mapping, monitoring and control of invasive species such as Asian Stilt grass (Japanese stiltgrass), Purple Loosestrife and Marsh day flower.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university to include 30 credit hours in social sciences, journalism, or public relations or a related field.
Experience: Two (2) years experience involving planning, coordinating and evaluating volunteer activities in a state facility, institution or community-based program.
Notes:
1. Additional experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Graduate level education in social sciences, journalism, public relations or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for experience at a rate of 30 college credits for one year of the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Thirty (30) credit hours in biology, natural resource management or the environmental or natural sciences is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, community partners and general public is preferred.
Knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maryland is preferred.
