Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Assateague State Park in Berlin, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

PARK RANGER (3 vacancies)

A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to: 

  • Provide visitors with park information and regulations 
  • Register campers
  • Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bath houses and restrooms 
  • General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles 
  • Monitor recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking and biking

PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER (20 vacancies)

The Seasonal Park Maintenance position is responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or recreation area. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to: 

  • Clean restrooms, shelters and campsites 
  • Refill bathroom supplies
  • Removal of litter
  • Maintenance of facilities and grounds 
  • Mow and trim grass
  • Painting, electric, carpentry and plumbing work 
  • Upkeep of vehicles, equipment and vessels
  • Use of hand tools and operation of power equipment

PARK NATURALIST (4 vacancies)

The Seasonal Park Naturalist develops and leads interpretive programming at a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and present interpretive and environmental education programs 
  • Assist with volunteers and youth programs
  • Develop and maintains exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials 
  • Advise the public of general park rules and regulations 
  • Operation and maintenance of nature centers, buildings and grounds
  • May include live animal care and handling associated with the Scales and Tales program

CONTACT STATION ATTENDANT / CAMPER CONTACT ATTENDANT (18 vacancies)

The Contact Station Attendant / Camper Contact Attendant is responsible for welcoming visitors to the park, collecting various service charges and/or registering campers. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:

  • Answer phones / provide information to visitors 
  • Register campers
  • Operate a computer reservation system
  • Handle money and provide change
  • Assist with facility upkeep and maintenance

 

LIFEGUARD- OCEAN BEACH (18 vacancies)

The Ocean Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring visitors have a safe and enjoyable recreational experience at an oceanfront beach. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor swimmers
  • Participate in training exercises and programs
  • Maintain beach area and equipment 
  • Provide information and assistance to visitors 
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Prepare written reports
  • Must be certified by a national agency in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR, as well as pass a physical evaluation, swim test and written test. Candidates may be certified after hire.

CONCESSION ATTENDANT (15 vacancies)

The Concession Attendant provides information to visitors about park facilities, programs and regulations. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate a cash register in the sale of park merchandise
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, materials and products
  • Complete required reports
  • Prepare and cook food 
  • Administer canoe and kayak rentals 
  • Assist with litter pickup near concession facility

CONCESSION MANAGER (5 positions)

 The Concession Manager manages merchandising of park-specific items for sale in a park camp store, beach area store or boat area store. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate a cash register in the sale of park merchandise
  • Prepare and cook food 
  • Clean camp store
  • Stock merchandise
  • Order merchandise for sale and maintain inventory
  • Assist park visitors

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR (2 positions)

The Volunteer Coordinator will match volunteers with opportunities within the park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain volunteer database
  • Coordinate volunteer training 
  • Provide general customer service and park information to visitors
  • Assist with volunteer projects
  • Communicate with current and new volunteers via phone and e-mail 
  • Develop volunteer program advertisements and assist with public relations
