Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service, is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Contractual Natural Resource Technician II. The selected candidate will primarily perform duties that include assisting in monitoring and surveying for the regionally rare wood turtle, Glyptemys insculpta, as well as assisting in the collection of blood/tissue samples of this species for genetic analysis. These duties will follow the guidelines and protocol developed by the Northeast Wood Turtle Working Group and implemented through a Competitive State Wildlife Grant. The incumbent will also assist in gathering distribution information on other rare reptiles and amphibians, including the coal skink, Plestiodon anthracinus, the mountain chorus frog, Pseudacris brachyphona, and the wehrle's salamander, Plethodon wehrlei. The coal skink has recently been discovered in the shale barren region of Allegany County. Additional potential habitat has been identified and is in need of further inventory for the species. The mountain chorus frog has undergone serious decline in Maryland and is in danger of becoming extirpated from the State. This species will require work to be conducted at night. Records for the wehrle's salamander (listed In Need of Conservation) have not been updated for over 10 years (with one exception). The focus of this work will be to update known occurrences. The selected candidate will also construct nest boxes for the State Endangered hellbender, Crytobranchus alleganiensis. The construction of these boxes is quite complicated and requires several hours per box. These boxes will then be placed in the aquatic habitat of the hellbender in hopes of securing eggs to be hatched in the laboratory so they can be raised and re-introduced to their native habitat. Assistance will also be provided with conducting a distributional survey for the State Endangered coal skink, Plestiodon anthracinus. This rare lizard has been recently discovered in the shale barren region of Allegany County. Only two extant sites for this species are known in the State. The incumbent will systematically search for habitat within the county that is similar to that found at the original capture site. The goal of that effort will be discovering the species status within the State of Maryland. As part of the Wildlife and Heritage Service's ongoing research on the wood turtle, Glyptemys insculpta, the selected candidate will help search for female nest sites. That distributional data is necessary to further understand which landscape features are needed for protection to help the conservation of this vulnerable species.
