Main Purpose of Job
The Department of Natural Resources, Blue Crab Program, at the Matapeake Work Center in Stevensville, MD, is currently accepting applications for two (2) Seasonal Contractual Natural Resource Technician II positions. The selected candidates will assist with field surveys that monitor the status of the blue crab population in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Duties will include both the trawl survey that samples crabs and key finfish species, as well as the Cooperative Blue Crab Data Collection Program which is conducted on commercial vessels. A wide range of areas are sampled from the head of the Bay to the MD/VA state line.
Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, as work on commercial vessels requires early starting times. Occasional overnight travel is required to access remote sampling areas.
Additional duties would include assisting with data entry. A strong work ethic and the ability to work independently, as well as in small teams, with minimal supervision in remote areas are essential. A valid driver's license is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.
Experience: None
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Strong field biology skills are preferred.
Ability to work independently in remote areas is preferred.
Experience with small boats and navigation is preferred.
Experience using Microsoft Excel is preferred.
