Based at 2825 S. Hanover Street, Baltimore, MD 21225 but includes in-state travel.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the Assistant Director of Cemetery and Memorial Programs is to supervise, manage and coordinate the day to day activities of the Maryland Veteran War Memorials (Vietnam, Korean and World War II), coordinate budget and be aware of maintenance activities of the staff of the War Memorial Building and to act as a Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs Cemetery Superintendent during periods of a Superintendents absence. Assist the Director of Cemetery and Memorial Programs in budget planning, energy conservation plans, and strategic operational plans. During periods of Superintendent substitution, the Assistant Director of Cemetery and Memorial Programs acts in most capacities of the Cemetery Superintendent. That is to say, supervise, manage and coordinate the day to day activities of a Maryland State Veterans Cemetery. This may include (depending on the length of substitution) most aspects of administration/personnel, cemetery operations, facility management, grounds management, equipment maintenance, supply/inventory management, resource management, strategic planning, policy and procedures development, special projects and other duties as assigned. The Assistant Director of Cemetery and Memorial Programs makes sure that the Department's mission to provide the best services and perpetual care of burial sites as well as the best possible maintenance of the Memorials is accomplished.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative staff or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of professional project management experience in the construction, repair, or maintenance of public or commercial buildings and/or grounds.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following:

  1. Professional project management experience in the construction, repair, or maintenance of public or commercial buildings and/or grounds.
  2. Professional experience directing and supervising the work of employees in a public or commercial facility setting.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
