Introduction

Administrative Officer I is administrative work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans or policies.

GRADE

Equivalent to Grade 13

$22.12 per hour

LOCATION OF POSITION

Vacancies currently exists in Hagerstown, Md. (Washington County) and Baltimore City.

Main Purpose of Job

The position functions as a Background Investigator for the DPSCS. The incumbent is responsible for the completion of comprehensive background investigations for the prospective agency employees. These investigations are reviewed by the Unit manager in order to determine an applicant's suitability for employment with the agency.

POSITION DUTIES

Interview prospective applicants; follow interview procedures as established by the Centralized Hiring Unit.

Review documents presented by the applicant to ensure authenticity; review other forms and materials submitted by applicants to ensure completeness and acceptability.

Complete the comprehensive background investigation.

Respond to inquiries from law enforcement agencies/entities with regard to background investigations.

Travels to the Eastern Shore of Maryland or other Baltimore City/County areas to participate in interviews.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: One (I) year experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included the regular independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year to year basis for the required education and experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess six (6) months of experience conducting comprehensive background investigations.

CANDIDATES MUST MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND THE SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE EMPLOYMENT (ELIGIBLE) LIST.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are preferred, not required: 

  • Experience in conducting investigations and preparing detailed reports
  • Knowledge of law enforcement employment practices
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated individual, intent on producing high quality reports
  • Ability to work as a team to fulfill the mission of the Hiring Unit

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
