Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to conduct advanced and complex radioactive materials inspections, investigation and surveys necessary to enforce Maryland Regulations Governing Radiation Protection and to protect public health and safety. This position is the technical expert in overseeing radiological investigations and special projects such as a team inspection of a large facility.

POSITION DUTIES

The following duties are examples of assignments performed by the incumbent in this classification.  It is not a total comprehensive list of duties, nor is it restrictive regarding job assignments:

  • Conducts routine as well as complex or advanced inspections and investigations at Maryland facilities where radioactive materials are used and stored; 
  • Interprets and applies Maryland Radiation Control regulations to determine the status of compliance at Maryland facilities that use and store radioactive materials;
  • Will act as the technical expert overseeing a project team of Health Physicists during complex inspections of specialized radiation control assignments;
  • Responds to radiological emergency responses;
  • Participates in radiological dispersion device, improvised nuclear device and nuclear power plant emergency exercise; 
  • Remains on call on a 24-hour basis to respond to radiological emergencies.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credits in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.

Experience: Four years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

Notes:

l. Candidates may substitute additional experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management or related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for three years of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for two of the required years of experience.

4. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in mathematical, biological or physical science for one year of the required experience.

5. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field for one year of the required experience.

6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

  • Experience with Radiation Control Regulations;
  • Experience working with radiation detection equipment;
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel);
  • Have the ability to drive full size vehicles on a daily basis.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Your application is part of the examination process.  The assessment will be a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of this position.  Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate educational and employment information on your application.  Successful candidates will be ranked as Qualified and placed on the employment list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.  Education credentials and experience verification will be completed by the Appointing Authority.  If you are scheduled to complete an education or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process, if one is required.  Please note that you will be required by the appointing agency to provide proof upon hire of all certifications, licenses, educational and work experiences.
