Main Purpose of Job

The HSCRC is seeking a Computer Network Specialist I to assist in performing the following tasks: maintaining servers, storage devices, and peripherals; installs and configures hardware and associated software with appropriate user privileges; creates user accounts assigning domain, application and local privileges and sets correct access to applications; maintains network resources according to the required standards; installs operating systems, application software, and network communications software; configures network software to appropriate specifications and user needs; installs and configures application software and customizes as required to specifications; generates and updates documentation as requested or instructed; documents changes to network infrastructure or configuration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer information technology, management information systems, or other information technology related field, to include course work in local or wide area computer network, from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Six months of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks.

Notes: 1. Candidates may substitute completion of high school or high school equivalency certificate and eighteen months of experience converting data from project specifications by preparing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages or other developmental tools; planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices; or evaluating, implementing and maintaining computer hardware and software for the required education.

 2. Candidates may substitute completion of high school or high school equivalency certificate and fifteen credit hours from an accredited college or university in systems analysis and applications programming using generally accepted computer programming languages or other developmental tools for the required education.

 3. Candidates may substitute completion of high school or high school equivalency certificate and completion of a certification program in Network Administration, such as Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), Microsoft Certified Product Specialist NT 4.0 Administrator or equivalent certification program for the required education.

 4. Candidates may substitute experience in one of the following areas on a year-for-year basis for a high school education: operating computer systems, scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining backups or data storage, processing data on computer systems, evaluating, implementing and maintaining computer hardware and software or converting data from project specifications by developing programs using generally accepted computer programming languages or other developmental tools.

5. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Network Analyst classifications or Network Integration and Management specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated knowledge of system security best practices, and industry standards; demonstrated knowledge configuring and maintaining Windows 2008 R2 Server Active Director objects and groups; TCP/IP sub-netting, Internet Information Server, and Microsoft Server Operating systems; demonstrated knowledge setting up and installing Windows 7x64 bit; knowledge of an Ethernet network, Smart switches and CAT6 cabling; demonstrated skills supporting user help desk requests; demonstrated skills in systems management, product integration, and managing the life cycle of technology products.

Ability to support and maintain a multi-server LAN technology; ability to interact and support the technology needs of users including installing and configuring various software, peripheral devices and network attached printers; ability to ensure network connectivity and functionality during core business hours; ability to write clear and concise instructions, updates and documentations; ability to maintain logs and records on system operations; ability to maintain a functional inventory for all of the information technology equipment, ability to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationship with network users, vendor representatives and system engineers.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
