POSITION DUTIES

If you are an IT professional with a background in Mainframe operating environments, the Comptroller of Maryland has a unique opportunity for you. We are seeking an experienced z/OS Operating System and Storage Management specialist and manager. In this position you will direct the team that installs, administers, and maintains the mainframe computer software at the state's premier data center. You will be relied on for the installation and administration of Direct Access Storage Devices (DASD), Virtual Optical DASD and tape subsystems. The implementation of the Disaster Recovery Plan, including off-site storage of backups as well as recovering the system at a remote location, will also be an exciting part of your responsibilities. Located in beautiful downtown historic Annapolis, this position will provide you the chance to be at the forefront of a leading edge mainframe IT environment.

PLEASE NOTE: This position is occasionally required to provide on-call support weekdays prior to 7:30 a.m. and/or after 5:00 p.m., weekends, and holidays. Comp time and flexible work options are available.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or other information technology related field. 

Experience: 3 years administering, installing and maintaining large mainframe computer software. 1 year of supervisory or management experience.

NOTES:

Candidates may substitute 4 years of additional work experience maintaining MVS mainframe and computer software for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in installing and maintaining a z/OS operating system and associated components using SMP/E, such as, JES 2, ISPF, SDSF, TSO, HSM, etc.
  • Install and maintain independent software vendor (ISV) system products as required on the z/OS mainframe
  • General knowledge of installing hardware components on z/OS mainframe, such as, DASD storage systems, Tape Libraries, etc.
  • Management and/or supervisory experience in  Information Technology environment

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Only applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications for this recruitment will be considered for this opportunity. The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience. Due to the nature of this list, all qualified applicants are placed on an unranked list of candidates and will remain active on this list for at least one year.  

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
