Main Purpose of Job
Serves as the appointing authority to manage the long range, as well as day-to-day activities of a correctional facility. This position is responsible for professional adult correctional institution management and supervisory work of unusual difficulty in directing all security, treatment and administration of a state prison.
POSITION DUTIES
Plans, organizes and evaluates for the overall management of the institution;
Directs all institutional operations and programs to include: inmate custody, treatment, maintenance and security of the entire physical plant including land, building, furnishings, equipment and machinery, Human Resources, Dietary, Case Management, Psychology and Medical Services.
Maintains lines of communication in order to manage institutional operations effectively and efficiently;
Promotes staff development within the institution, delegating authority when appropriate and directing staff through subordinate supervisors.
Manages and administers annual budget, including estimates and justifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree including fifteen (15) credits in Criminal Justice.
Experience: Seven (7) years experience in Criminal Justice or related field. Five (5) years of experience in a position of major responsibility (i.e. Director, Program Manager, Facilities Administrator, Correctional Security Chief, Correctional Officer Major or Department Head).
Notes: Additional experience in a position of major responsibility may substitute for education year for year up to four years. Thirty graduate credits in Criminal Justice or a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION
This position is limited to current Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services employees only.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees in this classification are subject to be on call 24 hours a day.
Employees appointed to this position are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience as presented on your application. Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified or Qualified and placed on the eligible list for at least one year.
