Volunteer Hearings & Appeals Intern

Introduction

This is a volunteer summer internship, which aims to provide substantive project involvement, activities and/or research sufficient to justify the award of course credit if requested.  We encourage flexibility and attention to the quality of the experience; attendance at job-related workshops; training opportunities; involvement with professional organizations; project-oriented assignments; mentoring; flexible, part-time schedules; and/or telework.  The internship period will take place between May/June 2015 and August/September 2015.  The specific start date, end date, hours and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor based upon mutual needs.

POSITION DUTIES

The Volunteer Hearings & Appeals Intern will have the opportunity to:

  • perform legal research to assist Hearing Officers, prepare Notices of Final Determination and otherwise resolve appealed cases, 
  • draft memoranda to request account adjustments supported by legal findings,
  • draft correspondence to taxpayers in matters not requiring a hearing, and
  • perform legal research to support the operations of the Compliance Division.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates will meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Successful completion of at least one (1) year of law school at an accredited university
  • Successful completion of a legal research and writing course

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fields of study in Taxation or State and Local Tax
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency with online legal research tools

SELECTION PROCESS
