Main Purpose of Job

The State Retirement Agency of Maryland is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Senior Investment Analyst within the Investment Division.  The Investment Division has responsibility for approximately $43 billion of assets held in trust for the members and beneficiaries of the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland.  With support for the System's investment consultants, the Investment Division recommends asset allocation, provides oversight of external managers, and implements Board initiatives.  Working with a team of professionals, the primary purpose of this position is to conduct investment research and offer prudent investment recommendations using complex financial modeling and analytical skills while maintaining strict adherence to fiduciary guidelines.  The incumbent will serve as a subject matter expert for one or more asset or sub-asset classes.  This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

The incumbent will work as part of the Public Equity team that ensures prudent investment of System assets in a well-diversified manner to optimize long-term returns while controlling risk and providing oversight of external managers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Investment research, analytics, idea generation and recommendations

2. Manager monitoring, compliance and due diligence.

3. Contract negotiations and ongoing communication with managers

4. Strong knowledge of equity markets, project management and other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative or professional work. Two years of this experience must have involved one or more of the following: the supervision of other employees, overseeing and coordinating the general operations of a unit, applying rules and regulations, or excercising responsibility for the development of policies or program development. 

Notes:

1. Additional experience in administrative or professional work may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required general experience at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for one year of the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One year of experience in the financial services industry performing investment research and providing investment analysis/recommendations.

One year of experience in a plan sponsor environment.

Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of investment management; appropriate safeguards and investment program risk mitigation, as well as knowledge of one or more investment asset classes.

Master's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Finance.

Certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), please include a copy of your certification with your application.

The examination may consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the job. It is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIFIED, or QUALIFIED.

The list will be valid for at least one year and may be extended.

The list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees.
