Main Purpose of Job

Videographers are the primary source for capturing the video images and sound that producers use to create their programs.  This position is allowed more latitutude and independence in creativity and the handling of the more difficult assignments requiring special lighting, numerous locations, special audio needs or interview subjects.  This position will supervise, train and evaluate the work of the videography staff.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Collaborates with a producer or director regarding preconceived ideas and physical realities of production setting and participates in program's visual development in conjunction with a producer.  Tests new equipment for purchase consideration; recommends purchase of supplies and equipment.  Coordinates, assigns and trains other videographers.  Perform evaluations with videographers.
  • A videographer operates portable equipment with the objective of recording video and audio for use in production.  The equipment includes video camera and accessories, microphones and audio mixer, lights and lighting related accessories, production equipment and transport vehicle.  The videographer must be capable of working with minimum supervision, while maintaining high standards of video production.  The position requires a firm grasp of the aesthetics of photography, camera movement and composition, plus facility with camera and recorded audio.
  • A videographer will offer direction to on-camera talent and should be concerned with the quality of the talent's performance.  A videographer should be aware of the specific needs of the client (producer, reporter, director), the limitations of the job (time, budget, relative priority) and the probable use of the product.  They will handle the scheduling of the necessary equipment for a production.
  • Studio/location production personnel operate as part of a television production crew.  They will assemble and disassemble sets, move and hang fixtures from a studio grid, assist the lighting director and setup and/or strike equipment after a production.  During production they must be able to perform in the role of floor director, camera operator, production assistant, robotic camera operator or telepromptor operator.
  • On location, the crew member will perform the same functions with portable television production equipment.  Crew members must display flexibility and initiative in achieving high standards.
  • This position will supervise, train and evaluate the work of the videography staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

AA in television production/film or a related field which included a hand-on training experience.  Ten years of videography and studio operation experience that includes the operation of video cameras, field lighting and audio equipment.  Education may be substituted for experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work involves physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more
  • Work can be in all kinds of weather conditions ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold.  Locations used can also be confined spaces, noisy environments or difficult terrain.
