Introduction

By law, DJS is a child-serving agency responsible for assessing the individual needs of referred youth and providing intake, detention, probation, commitment, and after-care services.  DJS collaborates with youth, families, schools, community partners, law enforcement, and other public agencies to coordinate services and resources to contribute to safer communities.

***The primary worksite for this position will be located at the DJS Easton Office listed above. However, the incumbent may be required to occasionally perform job duties at various DJS offices located within the Eastern Shore region and other parts of Maryland.

Main Purpose of Job

The Psychologist I will perform at an intermediate level by providing direct services for the youth who are pending disposition and placements.

POSITION DUTIES

The Psychologist I will perform at an intermediate level by providing direct services for the youth who are pending disposition and placements.  The Psychologist I will be responsible for administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological and psychosexual evaluations of an juvenile offender population based upon the youths' history of behavioral problems. The incumbent will participate in treatment teams and provide recommendations to the treatment team regarding diagnosis, treatment recommendations, placement recommendations, and other referrals as needed. 

The Psychologist I will provide crisis intervention and other clinical emergency-support services as needed to the juvenile offenders being held in the DJS detention facilities.  The position will require the incumbent to fulfill on-call responsibilities and occasional staff coverage during the evenings and weekends that may include crisis counseling, suicide assessments, and debriefings. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Psychologists under the licensing requirements for Psychologists.

Experience: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Psychologists under the licensing requirements for Psychologists.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates who possess at least one year of experience working with juvenile offender populations who are placed in residential settings (i.e. detention facilities, group homes, etc.) are highly desired.

Candidates who possess at least one year of experience conducting psychosexual assessments of adolescents/juveniles are highly desired.  

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates must be licensed as a Psychologist by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists prior to permanent appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a Maryland license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license has been obtained, submit a copy of the license to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Testing Unit to remove pending status.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
