This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The resulting eligible list will be used to fill positions in DPSCS Correctional facilities in Somerset, Maryland ONLY. 

Main Purpose of Job

To answer a multi-line switchboard telephone system at the Eastern Correctional Institution, which handles all calls for four(4) different compounds, ECI-Annex, ECI-West, ECI East, and PHPUR, as well as forward calls to appropriate compound, departments, and/ or staff. Maintain the ECI telephone directory by updating it quarterly. Directs callers as appropriate and/or provides information which requires a detailed knowledge of the institutional regulations and procedures.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Provides great customer service when answering incoming calls and transfers the call to appropriate compound, department extension number
  • Provides callers with general information about the institutions regulations, policy, and procedures
  • Prioritizes multiple calls so that emergency calls and situations are responded to immediately
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date phone numbers of offices and staff at the assigned agency or facility
  • Updates voicemail recordings for any changes in hours of operations and /or cancellations  
  • Assisting various departments and reporting maintenance requests
  • Places long distance and interagency call in accordance with individual requests and agency policy

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of eighth grade.

Experience: None.

Note: Additional experience performing telephone operator duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PC keyboard and basic computer skills
  • Switchboard or Call center experience

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this class may be subject to call 24 hours a day and be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone or electronic beeper number where they can be reached.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

The incumbent in this position is a member of a covered bargaining unit and will be required to pay a bi-weekly service fee to the exclusive representative of the bargaining unit.
