Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to perform the duties of shift supervisor in Computer Operations at the Public Safety Data Center. This involves the supervision of Computer Operators who perform various control functions on a large scale Mainframe IBM computers and associated peripheral equipment which run under an MVS/ESA software environment. The on-line computer system is utilized 24 hour a day, 365 days a year. The system is used for transaction processing by 1,850 terminals at 275 locations with 8,200 users throughout the state which are connected to the Public Safety Data Center.

POSITION DUTIES

·        Operates and monitors all mainframe and distributed mission critical computers by entering commands through associated system consoles and monitoring applications.

 ·        Establishes effective work productivity as it relates to efficient use of system resources to assure batch work and system task are processing timely and efficiently.

·        Resolves problems with users pertaining to providing requested assistance and information to users as well as with issues pertaining to reported or noted system problems, errors or equipment malfunctions utilizing agency protocol for handling mission critical processes and systems.

 ·        Supervision of employees on shift as it pertains to knowledge about employee activities and behaviors. Establishes regular processes for monitoring performance. Creates employee work schedule and approve employee leave and post leave on the schedule. Assures that all employees on the shift are up to date on all systems maintained in the computer room.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems.

Notes:

1. Experience operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing or maintaining information may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Fifteen credit hours in computer operation at an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Computer System Operations classifications or Computer System Operations specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
