Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to provide critical in-depth, scientific and technical reviews of detailed applications for new radioactive material licenses, radioactive material license renewals, amendments and terminations, and to conduct on-site inspections of new facilities in order to qualify them as physically adequate and with personnel competent to receive and use radioactive materials. Facilities include hospitals, industrial firms, medical offices, dental facilities, laboratories and other facilities where traveling is required and the environment includes exposure to radioactive materials. Also required of this position are highly technical reviews of radioactive sealed sources and devices containing radioactive material requested to be certified to be safe for manufacture and distribution in and from the State of Maryland. In addition, the incumbent will be required to participate and prove competency in many important technical roles in Calvert Cliffs and Peach Bottom nuclear power plant accident drills on a 24/7 basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credits in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience: Two years of experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute a Doctorate in health physics, nuclear physics, radiation management or related field of radiological health from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for the required two years of experience.
4. Candidates may substitute a Master’s degree in a mathematical, biological or physical science for one year of the required experience.
5. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree in radiation safety; radiological health, health physics or a related radiation control field for one year of the required experience.
6. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:

Experience working with Microsoft Office (i.e. Word and Access);

Familiarity with licensing and permits regulations and procedures;

Experience working with radiation detection equipment;

Customer service experience.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
Your application is part of the examination process. The assessment will be a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of this position. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate educational and employment information on your application. Successful candidates will be ranked as Qualified and placed on the employment list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees. Education credentials and experience verification will be completed by the Appointing Authority. If you are scheduled to complete an education or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process, if one is required. Please note that you will be required by the appointing agency to provide proof upon hire of all certifications, licenses, educational and work experiences.
The MD Department of the Environment does not sponsor individuals in the application of the H-1B Visa. You must be legally authorized and possess any necessary documents under this Act in order to be hired in the position for which you apply. For education obtained outside the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.
BENEFITS
Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
