LOCATION OF POSITION

Fort Frederick State Park- Big Pool, MD (Washington County)

Cunningham Falls State Park- Thurmont, MD (Frederick County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland Park Service is currently accepting applications for two seasonal contractual trail technicians at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool, Maryland (Washington County), and two seasonal contractual trail technicians at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont, Maryland (Frederick County). These positions will provide assistance for recreational programs and facilities including the operation and maintenance of sites, trails, pathways, and campgrounds. Duties include:

  • Restore and construct trails
  • Will involve one or more of the following: mowing, brushing, pruning, sawing, re-painting tree blazes, clearing culverts debris, water bar rehabilitation, and litter pickup
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as hand tools, power tools and chainsaw
  • Able to take direction and work independently.
  • Work is outdoors in remote locations.
  • Candidates should be able to read and navigate with a map.
  • Work is physical. Candidates should be able to walk at least five miles per day.
  • Candidates must be able to lift at least 25 pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None.

Experience: None.

For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.htm.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following.  Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

Natural Surface trail maintenance or construction experience is preferred.

Volunteer experience is preferred (e.g. Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, Mid-Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts, Boy Scouts, etc.).

Familiar with sustainable natural surface trail concepts practiced by US Forest Service, Appalachian Trail Conference, and/or International Mountain Bicycling Association is preferred.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who works for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
