Introduction

By law, DJS is a child-serving agency responsible for assessing the individual needs of referred youth and providing intake, detention, probation, commitment and after-care services. DJS collaborates with youth, families, schools, community partners, law enforcement and other public agencies to coordinate services and resources to contribute to safer communities.

Main Purpose of Job

The incumbent will provide supervision over staff and juveniles, manage daily transportation operations, coach and lead staff, maintain statistical data, crisis intervention counseling, court security/escorting/transports of Juveniles in the care of the Department of Juvenile Services. To ensure safe and timely transports of juveniles from institutions, courts, group homes, shelter care facilities, airports, hospitals, mental institutions, and other facilities within the State of Maryland and surrounding states in conjunction with court schedules, an appointments times, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission Regulation.

Experience: Three years of experience providing supervision and guidance to youth in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth.

Note:

1.  The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Correctional Services Articles, Section 8-209.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Social Services Aid and Assistant classifications or Social Services Aid and Assistant specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates who possess the following experience is highly desired/preferred:

  • Experience managing a team of staff to include planning and organizing their workload is preferred
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite is preferred
  • Highly proficient in customer service in an office and field work setting is preferred
  • 5 years driving experience/driving a 15 passenger vehicle is preferred
  • Experience with good written and oral communication skills is highly desired

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

This recruitment is limited to current Maryland State employees only

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates must be certified by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission prior to appointment and are required to maintain certification while employed.

2. Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. In accordance with the Correctional Services Article of the Maryland Annotated Code, Section 8-209, the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee in a mandated position. These requirements are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.10.01.04, general regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, and include: U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status Must be at least 21 years of age A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing An oral interview, and Physical and psychological examinations.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be supplied with a pager or may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number at which they can be reached.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09 – Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
