Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, (DNR) Forest Service/Western Region, is currently accepting applications for a Seasonal Maintenance Assistant at Potomac-Garrett State Forest, Oakland (Garrett County) Maryland. The selected candidate serves as crew chief and will lead lower level maintenance workers in maintenance of State Forest. This position is responsible for maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment of the State Forest. The work entails independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including heavy equipment operations for road and trail maintenance, routine construction work, campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventative maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Other duties may include but are not limited to: operating both small and heavy equipment, planting trees, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects, wildland fire suppression and boundary line maintenance. The selected candidate may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays.

 Note: must be able to lift 70 lbs and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

1. Experience operating small equipment such as skid steer, mowers (equivalent to JD X300 or 720), chainsaws;

2. Experience operating heavy equipment such as front-end loader (equivalent to JD 54J), dozer (equivalent to JD 450H), tractor (equivalent to NH TSD100), and radial arm brush hog (17' reach);   

3. Completed S-022, S-130, S-190 Wildfire Training Courses

Note: Courses required as part of the minimum experience should be listed on the application to receive credit. Failure to do so will result in being found ineligible for the position.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Willingness to take S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw Training is preferred.

Experience applying presticides and the completion of "Pesticides Users Safety Training" or equivalent is preferred.

A Class A or B Commercial Driver's License is preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
