Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Service, is currently accepting applications for two seasonal/contractual positions to assist in the Maryland DNR's Hatcheries Division Anadromous Restoration project American shad strip spawning restoration program.    

The assigned work location for the American shad strip spawn positions are Manning State Fish Hatchery in Brandywine, Maryland. Manning Hatchery is located in Cedarville State Forest which is south of Washington DC, near Waldorf, Maryland.  

Work hours are dependent on tide; an eight-hour day is worked between approximately 2:00pm and 1:00am. Work will take place Monday through Friday. Applicants will be expected to work under harsh physical and weather conditions, frequently into the night out on the water. This position is a great way to gain fisheries fieldwork experience.  

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Maintenance and the deployment of gill nets from a boat
  • Removing American shad and other fish species from gill nets
  • Aid in the strip spawning of American shad
  • Assisting in data collection
  • Data entry
  • Sample preparation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None

Notes: 

1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
