Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 200,000 active members and more than 142,000 retires and beneficiaries.

This is an "at will" position and will serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

Main Purpose of Job

The Senior Investment Analyst provides analysis of external investment manager performance and ensures that compliance issues are appropriately monitored, evaluated, investigated, resolved and communicated for the public equity asset class. Interviews, evaluates and recommends potential investments. Utilizes quantitative analytical tools to perform attribution and other investment analysis to aid in portfolio management. Serves as a subject matter expert within the Public Equity team.

POSITION DUTIES

The incumbent will work as part of the Public Equity team that ensures prudent investment of System assets in a well-diversified manner to optimize long-term returns while controlling risk and providing oversight of external managers. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 1.    Investment research, analytics, idea generation and recommendations

2.    Data base management and quantitative analysis

3.    Manager monitoring, compliance and due diligence

4.    Contract negotiations and ongoing communications with managers

5.    Strong knowledge of global public equity markets.

6.    Project duties and other duties as assigned

7.    Travel up to 10% of the time, which may include some international travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience in administrative staff or professional work. Two years of this experience must have been in investments or finance with an analytical focus, or other relevant experience.

Notes

Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the general experience at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for one year of the required general experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications

· Public market investment experience is highly preferred, particularly in performing due diligence. 

· One year of experience in the financial services industry performing investment research and providing investment analysis and/or recommendations.

· One year of experience in a plan sponsor environment.

· Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of investment management; appropriate safeguard and risk mitigation in an investment program, as well as knowledge of one or more investment asset classes.

· Master's degree in Business Administration or Finance.

· Certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), please include a copy of your certification with your application.
