INTRODUCTION

This position will be assigned responsibilities that will support required activities performed by the Acute Disease Service related to disease and outbreak investigation, epidemiologic and analytic investigation, prevention, and control of communicable diseases, including H1N1 swine flu.  The position will analyze disease data to determine increased incidence of disease necessitating epidemiologic investigation and control activities; collect relevant data and summarize information from sources to prepare status reports; design valid statistical survey tools to be used to determine population health status and improve program performance; prepare technical reports, articles, presentations and summaries of analytic findings; provide expert consultation to public and private health care providers regarding incidence, spread, treatment, prevention and control of communicable diseases; coordinate the development or modification of data collection activities to ensure appropriate documentation and reporting for program management and grant requirements; maintain thorough technical knowledge analytic techniques; and provide expert consultation to the Service and to internal and external partners.

BASIC PURPOSE

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the surveillance, investigation, and evaluation of communicable or chronic diseases, injuries or conditions, and assists in the planning and implementation of epidemiological programs to prevent and control diseases, injuries, or conditions.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

The Epidemiologist job family has four levels which are distinguished by the depth and breadth of accountability, the expertise required to perform assigned duties and the responsibility assigned for the leadership of others.

Level I:     
This is the basic level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities at the entry level of professional work.  This includes performing data collection; analyzing data using basic epidemiological methods; participating in workgroups; and effectively communicating both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Level I:     
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in public health, biological, medical, or health science which includes 6 semester hours in epidemiological methods and 6 semester hours of other epidemiological coursework and 9 semester hours in statistical methods and analysis.
