Nurse Coordinator

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing or Executive Director or Executive Director’s designee, assists in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the psychiatric nursing programs.

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing or Executive Director or Executive Director’s designee, assists in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the psychiatric nursing programs.

The Nurse Coordinator has twenty-four hour responsibility for the nursing component of the facility.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
Serves as a role model in clinical practice by demonstrating a professional demeanor and effective communication in the process of the delivery of nursing care which meets or exceeds standards of care.

Assists in the development and implementation of patient care initiatives to improve the quality of patient care.

Serves as an effective change agent to promote healing and recovery.

Coordinates the development of nursing rehab groups for patients.

Serves as a liaison with other departments to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of patient care activities.

Insures adequate, safe and cost-effective staffing levels on all units under supervision.

Insures compliance with departmental and facility policies and procedures.  Coordinates training to insure 100% compliance in staff receiving training regarding policies and procedures. Consistently implements corrective action as indicated. 

Conducts assessments of education needs for staff under supervision.  Develops educational programs to meet those needs.  Coordinates training to insure staff  obtain the necessary, basic tools to perform job.

Assists in the development and implementation of an extended orientation process for new employees, implementation of a 'mentor' system and an effective tool to measure staff competency at all levels of nursing.

Identifies areas of need for professional growth and development and facilitates staff participation.

Participates in the development of staff retention programs.
Conducts staff meetings regularly to promote quality patient care, communication, team building and professional relationships.

Coordinates the Performance Improvement activities for all areas of supervision in conjunction with the PI coordinator.

Establishes and maintains records and reporting systems.

Represents the nursing department on committees within the facility.

Supports the philosophy and goals of the nursing department, the facility and The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of professional psychiatric nursing theory, practice and techniques; of Federal and State rules and regulations concerning health services; of accreditation, certification and licensure standards; of nursing standards; of departmental and facility policies and procedures; of principles and methods of teaching; of principles and practices of effective supervision
Ability to organize, plan, implement and evaluate nursing programs for a specific  component of the hospital; to develop productive interpersonal skills and maintain effective relationships with others; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to develop quality improvement controls to monitor and  determine the effectiveness of programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Possession of a valid permanent Oklahoma license to practice Registered Nursing as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. A Master’s Degree and three (3) years of professional nursing experience, one of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Or

a Bachelor’s Degree and four years of professional nursing  experience, one of which must have been in a supervisory capacity

Or

five (5) years of professional nursing experience, one which must have been in an administrative, managerial, or supervisor capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Upon a conditional offer of employment, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services applicants must submit to a physical examination and shall meet the physical examination requirements of occasionally lifting/carrying 50 pounds and able to push and pull a maximum force of 25 pounds.
